On the island of Reichenau, gardeners are beginning to harvest lettuce. This makes Reichenau the first growing area in Germany to bring fresh lettuce to market in the new year. More than 2.5 million lettuces will be available in spring.
From mid-January to April, the early lettuces from the vegetable island are in season. In addition to the classic butterhead lettuce, the range expanded over time, so that today oak leaf variations, lollo bionda and lollo rossa, as well as the particularly crunchy cabbage lettuce are also grown. The ideal climatic conditions at Lake Constance and the humus-rich, fertile soil, as well as the relatively warm winter weeks with many bright days, are the best prerequisites for the particularly good quality of this year’s lettuces.
Short transport routes
The produce is harvested by hand daily in the early morning hours and transported immediately to the cooperative’s refrigerated marketing hall. From there, it goes directly to the customer in ultra-modern refrigerated vehicles. Reichenau vegetables are mainly offered regionally in Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria and, thanks to the short transport routes, can thus fulfill its promise of “fresh from the vegetable island every day”.
Reichenau salads are protected as a geographical trademark by the European Union.
